Lucknow, which is situated on the banks of the river Gomti, is claimed to be among the most ancient of Hindu cities. With a population of 1.7 million, it is also the Capital of Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state.
Lucknow can be reached from Delhi by train or plane, though reservations must be made far in advance to ensure a proper sleeping berth for your overnight journey by train or via a 5-hour express train during the day. In addition, three airlines fly regularly between major cities and Lucknow.
